On courses and colleges

Watching my boyfriend’s little sister try to decide on which college to go to, and what to study, I felt a small sense of despair welling up in me. The college she was looking at was fairly well-known, but she was selecting it because it was where her friends were going—which was the same reason that she wanted to study a particular course.

My boyfriend and I, both fairly recent graduates, both work in fields that we love, and we’ve tried to drill it in to her that it’s vitally important that if you’re going to spend a substantial amount of time and money at university, you should study something that you love and are passionate about. Like her, we both got the marks to study prestigious courses at prestigious universities, but we would have been miserable devoting our student lives—and our subsequent working life, which is no small amount of time—to topics and subjects that didn’t really interest us.

My boyfriend’s sister has been working full-time for my boyfriend over the holidays, and she confessed to me that she was absolutely exhausted by the (standard) hours she had been working. She told me that she didn’t know how we managed the 9-5 grind.

Really, the answer’s pretty simple—ignore the well-meaning advice of friends and family who want you to have particular grades and college experiences and careers that they can brag about, and instead, be true to yourself in selecting a course that you are truly passionate about. When choosing your college, don’t simply aim for prestige, but look for an institution whose lecturers and academics are absolute standouts in your field. Having such individuals as your mentors will give you and your learning a great step-up, and you’ll be well on your way to success in an area that you truly care about.

Quick thing, I have just had a look at the web design for this human resources software page and I must admit that even though I know absolutely nothing about web design, I really like that look of it. I am thinking of creating a history site with this design in mind, thoughts?
